Wheelchairs

A wheelchair is a mobility device designed to assist people who have difficulty walking or standing, or who have mobility impairments.  It typically consists of a seat, a backrest, two large wheels, and two smaller wheels or casters for stability and maneuverability.  The user can operate the wheelchair by pushing the large wheels or by using a hand-operated control, which propels the wheels using a motor or electric power.

Wheelchairs come in a variety of designs and styles, including manual and electric models:

  • Manual (body-powered) wheelchairs are operated by the user or by a caregiver, and require physical effort to push or propel.
  • Electric wheelchairs, also known as power chairs, are operated using a joystick or control panel, and use an electric motor to move the wheels.

Wheelchairs are often prescribed by healthcare professionals to help individuals with mobility impairments maintain independence and participate in daily activities.  They can be used both indoors and outdoors, and are available in a range of sizes and configurations to accommodate different needs and preferences.
